Join a Virtual Support Group Dec. 20

Laptop and notepage on black bgdThe Scleroderma Foundation's Tri-State Chapter invites all members of the scleroderma community to its upcoming virtual support group meeting 2 p.m. Eastern Tuesday, Dec. 20.

This phone-in support group is for patients, family members and caregivers. Call-in or join through your computer/smartphone device, listen to a great presentation and ask questions from wherever you are. The goal is to provide education and improve well-being and understanding of the disease. The more you learn, the better advocate you become for yourself or someone you care for – join us!

The guest speaker is Theresa T. Lu, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Scientist, Autoimmunity and Inflammation Program and Pediatric Rheumatology, Hospital for Special Surgery, and the topic is "Adipose Derived Stem Cells and Fibrosis Research." New and ongoing research at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City has identified a possible mechanism behind the fibrosis that occurs in scleroderma – a mechanism that may one day lead to a treatment for the disease. Join us on the call as Dr. Lu explains the research and how it may well be something patients might participate in soon.

Caregiving can be one of the most rewarding jobs. By watching over your loved one, you're strengthening the bond between the two of you and you're giving him or her something to look forward to each day. But as pleasing as it may be to lend a helping hand, you can't forget to look after yourself. The patience and understanding that's necessary for caregiving may turn into a stress overload, which can impact your own health and well-being.

However, it's important to remember as a caregiver that your mental and physical health and needs are also immportant. Sunrise Senior Living offers some useful guidelines for how to relieve stress as you help someone else.

Can I Eat This?

In this session, Dr. Arnold Postlethwaite answers this question in more. The "Can or Should I Eat This" question is constantly in the back of the mind of most scleroderma patients. The types of abnormalities that can develop in patients with scleroderma in all parts of the GI tract are a major contributor to malnutrition and intolerance to specific types of foods in many patients.
