Take Action to Save Medicare Benefits for People with Rheumatic Diseases
Medicare beneficiaries, and the medical professionals
who care for them, face significant complexities in managing care and
treatment options associated with rheumatic conditions, such as
scleroderma/systemic sclerosis, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Newly proposed
regulations will make it more difficult for rheumatologists to prescribe
certain medications that can be life-improving and, in some cases, life-saving,
to people with rheumatic conditions who receive Medicare benefits. Such
medications include biologics, which are currently covered under Medicare Part
B, but may not be covered under the proposed new regulations. The
Coalition of State Rheumatology Organizations is asking for people with
rheumatic conditions such as scleroderma and their families/caregivers to join
them in the fight to preserve Medicare beneficiaries access to all treatments
that healthcare professionals deem appropriate.
